20 Years Later: Cool As Ice

cool as ice vanilla ice

Here’s a simple rule in life: if someone/something proclaims itself as cool, that’s very uncool. For a brief moment though, during 89-90, Vanilla Ice was believed by some to be a rising star. We still don’t know on what drugs they were at the time, but his hit single ‘Ice Ice Baby‘ (or Under Pressure as some prefer to call it) was even nominated for a Grammy! Sadly, Vanilla‘s fame had to vanish because he was a character who couldn’t exist out of the early 90′s. White boys with flashy clothes and weird haircuts were already out in 1992. Continue Reading

20 Years Later: Hot Shots

hot shot sheenIn 1991, way before the “winning” era, Charlie Sheen was slowly making his way into comedy. The first Hot Shots was (quite obviously) a parody of Top Gun by the ZAZ team (Zucker, Abrahams, Zucker). Interestingly, Charlie Sheen almost got the part of Maverick…so maybe it was some sort of revenge on his part. Who knows?

Hot Shots was surely an idiotic movie, but it was always funny. The movie made 181 millions worldwide, which would equal around 286 millions right now with the inflation! It surely was a great sucess at the box office and it spawned a sequel ( Part Deux).

Looking back, we can wonder what when wrong over the years with the spoof movies. How can we go from Hot Shots to Meet the Spartans? Sure, Friedberg and Seltzer are probably to blame for most of the crap of the past decade…but even Zucker and Abrahams have lost their touch over the years! Maybe the loss of innocence that we feel today killed this type of comedy? After the 90′s, we probably had enough.

Movie clip after the jump. Continue Reading

Our hero does what he does best (the opposite of banks): stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. Continue Reading
